Tensions between China and Japan have escalated, following Beijing’s announcement of the creation an air defence zone over a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea. China conducted its first air patrol over the area on the weekend, infuriating its neighbour. Japan says the zone, and the patrols, are unacceptable, and is warning of the danger of what it terms ‘unpredictable events’.
