India’s government reprimanded China for crossing a national boundary and setting up camp last Monday (April 15), six miles into its territory.
Indian media quoted a government source as saying the incursion was a difference of opinion as to where the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is.
The border between India and China is an unresolved point of contention between the two countries. The de facto border runs some 2,500 miles across the Himalayas.
The Chinese regime denied that its soldiers were infringing on territorial agreements in the Ladakh desert, saying it was merely a routine border patrol.
India lost a short but bloody war with China in 1962, fought in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
Today India controls Arunachal Pradesh, while China administers a large area adjacent to Ladakh called Aksai Chin.
Small incursions are common across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), but it is rare for either country to set up camp so deep within disputed territory.
Indian media says Indian troops have set up camp about 300 yards from the Chinese soldiers.
India’s Foreign Ministry said it is in talks with China over the incursion and expects the issue to be resolved peacefully.
