A suicide car bomb followed by an assault by grenade-throwing gunmen on a police headquarters in Kirkuk — an ethnically mixed city in territory claimed by both the central government and the Kurds — in north Iraq killed 30 people on Sunday.

The attack shattered a relative calm in Iraq, which has been grappling with a political crisis pitting Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki against his erstwhile government partners.No organisation claimed responsibility, but Sunni militants including al-Qaeda’s front group in Iraq frequently target security forces and government targets. — AFP
